Microsoft's mice which have "Blue Track" technology (not sure I'd I spelled it correctly) work on all sorts of surfaces - even smooth white trays which seem to confuse other mice. For instance the 3500, with a list price around $30, but often on sale at Best Buy or Staples for sbout $15.
Any new wireless today will have a tiny USB connector which can stow inside the mouse when unused, or be left in a laptop's USB slot with less likelihood of becoming detached. Bluetooth mice don't even need that, but require Bluetooth on the laptop and are usually closer to $50.
